The international Life Science Business Plan Competition BOB ("Best of Biotech - get your business started") is an international life science business plan competition organised by Life Science Austria (LISA), a program run by the Austria Wirtschaftsservice on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth. After five very successful BOB competitions since 2000, BOB is now being organised for the sixth time, to be held in 2012. The goal of the competition is to motivate scientists and other creative individuals in the life sciences to translate their innovations into professional business plans by providing comprehensive and individualised coaching. The innovations may belong to red, green, blue and white biotechnology, bioinformatics and medical technology. BOB is organised in two phases: In phase 1, the participants submit short business ideas, in phase 2 the business ideas are transformed into professional business plans. An international jury evaluates the business plans and determines the winners. BOB offers researchers not only the opportunity to win a significant cash prize, but participants receive also intensive feedback and support during the competition by the BOB coaches of the AplusB-Centers in Austria and the international partner organisations. In workshops, external speakers provide information on relevant topics like Marketing, IP and Financing. Moreover, a coaching session is organised during which the participants work closely with coaches to refine the business plans and train the jury presentation. At the end of the competition, with their professional business plans on hand, the teams fulfill well the preconditions to successfully start their own companies. Best of Biotech is organised in cooperation with the AplusB-Centers, the Austrian incubators, as well as international cooperation partners in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Italy and Slovenia. The 3 main prizes are sponsored by Baxter, Boehringer Ingelheim and AFFiRIS. For the second time, the Viennese Biotech cluster LISAvienna provides funding for the LISAvienna Medtech Award for the best Medical Technology business plan. Further financial support for BOB is provided by the Standortagentur Tyrol. The results of Best of Biotech up to day are impressive: 41 new businesses set-up and 170,000 euro prize money.
