BOB - Best of Biotech 2010 - An international life sciences business plan competition
BOB ("Best of Biotech - get your business started") is an international life sciences business plan competition organized by Life Science Austria (LISA), a program run by the Austria Wirtschaftsservice on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth. After four very successful BOB competitions since 2000, BOB is now being organized for the fifth time, to be held in 2010.
What are BOB's goals?
- Motivating scientists and other creative individuals in the life sciences to become entrepreneurs
- To translate life science innovations into professional business plans and presentations through comprehensive and individualized coaching for its participants
- High visibility of the winners in the life science community and networking opportunities for all
- Encouraging commercial exploitation of applications-oriented scientific research and innovation
- Continued promotion of Austria and Central Europe as a life science business incubator
How to prepare for BOB?
There are still 3 months to go until online registration opens for phase 1 of BOB 2010. But, if you are interested in participating in the competition you can already start preparing: Get familiar with the schedule and the rules of the competition, and think about how to translate your innovation into a viable business concept. Use the business plan handbook as a reference to set up your business idea and business plan. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us!

Science4Life Venture Cup - The Nationwide Business Plan Competition
Science4Life is the founder initiative of the State of Hesse (Germany) and the leading European pharmaceutical company sanofi-aventis. Each company founded not earlier than August 31st, 2008 can participate in this widely accepted business plan competition which is focussed on the Life Sciences and Chemistry.Participation is not restricted to Germany. Participants have come from West and East European countries and also from the USA. In 2003, the winner team came from Austria.
The business plan competition Science4Life is very popular and former participants appreciate the intensive qualified feedback on their own business ideas from both perspectives, the business and the scientific point of view. In the meantime Science4Life represents a quality mark for the participants, which is very helpful to open the doors of potential investors.

OPEN NOW: The Call for Proposals for the 2nd intake of the Science and Technology Fellowship Programme (STF2 China) The deadline for submission of proposals is 29 October 2009 at 16:00 Beijing Time.
The Science and Technology Fellowship Programme provides young qualified EU researchers with the linguistic and intercultural skills to benefit from practical research experience with top-notch Chinese research and scientific organisations. In April 2009 the first group of 30 outstanding young scientists from 12 different EU Member States arrived to China for six months of intensive Chinese language and culture training, followed by an 18-month research period in a reputable Chinese research institution.

The European Commission launches 53 FP7 calls for proposals
The European Commission has published several calls for proposals in various thematic areas of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
Thematic areas under the Cooperation Specific Programme include:
- 'Health' (three calls);
- 'Food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology' (one call);
- 'Information and communication technologies' (two calls);
- 'Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies' (six calls);
- 'Energy' (four calls);
- 'Environment (including climate change)' (one call);
- 'Transport' (six calls);
- 'Socio-economic sciences and humanities' (four calls);
- 'Space' (one call);
- 'Security' (one call).
Calls under the Capacities Specific Programme are dedicated to the following Themes:
- 'Research infrastructures' (two calls);
- 'Research for the benefit of SMEs' (one call);
- 'Regions of knowledge' (one call);
- 'Research potential' (two calls);
- 'Science in society' (four calls);
- 'Activities of international cooperation' (four calls).
An additional seven cross-thematic calls combine up to five different Themes. Finally, the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Independent Researcher Grants (three sub-calls) are intended to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish or consolidate a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe.
